Bosence Building Conservation Identity

Specialising in traditional lime plastering, decorative ceilings and friezes, Bosence Building Conservation offer a wide range of skills in the conservation and production of ornate architectural features, with the majority of their work concerned with ornate plaster decoration.

At a meeting early on in the project, founder Ben Bosence described a traditional technique they use to restore ornate plaster ceiling decorations. Instead of simply reworking the damaged area so that it replicates the original, they produce a concaved version that ‘reflects’ it. When viewed from below the difference between the original and the ‘concaved’ restoration is indiscernible to the human eye. However when viewed up close the restored section can easily be distinguished.

The description of this process became central to our development of the identity. We set the Bosence logotype in Helvetica, the clean, no-nonsense shapes communicate the objectivity and independence of the company. For the business cards, we chose to foil block – in this instance a hand finished process – the personal contact details into a heavyweight grey card. The tactility and architectonic nature of this process reflects the subtle intervention of the restoration technique and combines with the use of Helvetica to communicate the sensitivity and sincerity of Bosence Building Conservation.
